'Ultimate' Green Goblin makes his animated debut
Forget the bad guy in the Halloween mask. The supervillain is a real monster in this Sunday's 'Ultimate Spider-Man.'
The newest version of the iconic comic-book bad guy makes his debut in a special one-hour episode of Ultimate Spider-Man on Disney XD's Marvel Universe block at 11 ET/PT Sunday morning. And he's a truly monstrous fellow, much different from the crazy guy in the mask with the Goblin Glider and pumpkin bombs that first made his appearance in Marvel Comics in the mid-1960s.
"Through the movies and comics, the Green Goblin is probably the most famous villain in Spider-Man's rogues gallery, and this is the opportunity to witness the origin of a villain and see exactly how much trouble Spider-Man is in," says Jeph Loeb, executive vice president — head of television for Marvel Entertainment and Ultimate Spider-Man executive producer.
In Sunday's episode, Norman is transformed into the Green Goblin and pitted against Spidey, S.H.I.E.L.D. and his teenage pals Nova, Power Man, Iron Fist and White Tiger. But all of them combined have a fight on their hands with the monstrous Goblin, inspired by the Ultimate Spider-Man comics by Brian Michael Bendis, one of the show's consultants.
"He's a creature of almost Hulk-like strength but with Norman's incredible intelligence," Loeb says. "To a certain extent, you're rooting for Norman — you really want him to recognize that what he's doing is wrong and he's gotta take control of himself."
However, Loeb adds, audiences will have the same problem with him as Peter does. "You want to smack him in the face and make sure he doesn't hurt anybody, but by the same token you want to make sure you don't hurt the man because, at the end of the day, your hope is to be able to save him. Who wouldn't want to do that for their best friend's father?"
Venom will also be appearing in the one-hour, action-packed spectacle, and Loeb teases that — appropriately for the upcoming holiday— the masks are coming off when it comes to Green Goblin and Venom.
"Let's put it this way: It's very complicated when Spider-Man has to deal with both Venom, who's his best friend, and Goblin, his best friend's father," Loeb says. "It'll teeter on which side Venom falls on. We've seen in the show that Harry can sometimes push through and try to get Venom to behave, so there's an awful lot at stake."
