Cosplay Friday: Sandra Bullock and Son as "Toy s Story's" Jessie and Buzz

Here's an adorable picture of Sandra Bullock with her son dressed as Jessie and Buzz from Disney-Pixar's Toy Story! Sandra would make a great Jessie don't you think?

Bullock is no stranger to working with Disney/Touchstone Pictures. In 2009 she teamed up with fellow Disney/Marvel fan Ryan Reynolds for "The Proposal."

Marvel Cinematic Universe: delated by lawsuit 10-Disc is back on, ships April 2nd

Just in case you were wondering whatever happened to that delayed-by-lawsuit 10-disc Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled Blu-ray set that captured a full series of the Disney / Marvel movies, Amazon is notifying pre-orderers (previously mollified with free The Avengers discs) of the new release date: April 2nd. While the original suitcase has been scrapped due to a licensing dispute with its designer, a recent post on Marvel's blog revealed the set will still come in a not-exactly-S.H.I.E.L.D. briefcase complete with glowing Tesseract inside. The movies, bonus content, art cases and all are still intact, however with the delay have come a few extras. Buyers can expect an early preview of Iron Man 3 and the Phase Two series of flicks, as well as prop replicas and never-before-seen extras from the earlier films. The bad news? The price appears to have gone up, flashing a $219 MSRP and currently selling for $197 on Amazon. While you're thinking that over, check after the break for a clip from Thor that didn't make the theatrical cut.

Why You Should Hold On To DISNEY And Consider Buying More

Why Disney stock could easily rise 10% in the next year.

Dividend:
Worth noting is the rise in dividend payments over the last few years. Investors may have been turned off by the 15 cent raise after the 50% rise last year from 40 to 60 cents. The year before that was at 35 cents. So over the course of three years, Disney's dividend has more than doubled from 35 to 75 cents.

Marvel Comics:
All of the major characters from The Avengers have new movies that will be coming out in the next few years. Iron Man 3 is probably the most prominent and will be released in May, followed by Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor: The Dark World, Avengers 2, and probably an Edward Nortonless Hulk at some point. These movies are like printing money and allow for risky productions that could bomb, like John Carter. In the interest of a shareholder knowing what he is investing in, I tried to watch this last week and got about half an hour in before realizing I will never get that half hour back. But book adaptations have an inherent risk of being awful, and maybe they will be able to reuse these Martians in Star Wars. Speaking of which…

Lucasfilm:
No matter how much money gets sunk into Episode VII, it's tough to image a way in which this film does not do well at the box office. The Dark Knight: Rises was not as good as The Dark Knight and still made $200 million more than its budget, and that was just domestically. So can Star Wars justify a $4 billion dollar investment? Probably, Star Wars has an incredibly large fan base: basically anyone that was between the ages of 10 and 35 in 1980 and again in 2000. And on top of that is the fact that Star Wars is the best merchandiser in the entertainment world, as evidenced by the newest version of Angry Birds (note: the Hoth levels were just released).

ESPN:
There is a good chance that many readers do not know what the EPL is, which is proof that ESPN will not lose much in not being able to show a game or two before most are awake on Saturday and Sunday mornings. With this deal, NBC has locked down soccer, hockey, and cycling. I do not have the numbers, but I would bet that 16 weeks of Monday Night Football has a bigger draw than all three of those combined for the year. In sum, I think that ESPN can continue paying large sums for broadcasting rights and recoup that amount from advertisers and cable subscribers. With the still largely untapped online media market available, it is safe to say that ESPN is stable and growing.

Vacationing:
Initially I was not going to include this as a subsection, but I came across this article during my bankruptcy law class today. The first ship listed on CNN's list of best new cruise ships is the Disney Fantasy, and it was not that long ago that I was writing about the then-new Disney Dream. A pretty obvious fact about cruise ships is that they take a long time to make. The Fantasy and the Dream are essentially the same thing, ordered at the same time in 2007 from Meyer Werft, both housing 4,000 passengers. Since they were both bought pre-recession, it will be interesting to see what kind of profits these ships are making. Like a restaurant, I wouldn't give too much credence to first and second year numbers, but there are rumors that Meyer Werft has been commissioned to build two more ships which shows that Disney has faith in their profitability.

There is really no argument that Disney's parks are second to none and they are the building block of what the company has grown to become. The looming fiscal cliff could have substantial effects on the economy, but the parks came out the recession unscathed and it is reasonable to believe that they will persevere again. A tenet of value investing is picking up good companies when they are at depressed prices. I mentioned that the Lucasfilms deal could knock down Disney's stock price, which has had trouble breaking the $50 mark anyway. I also mentioned that Disney could give an investor 10% over the next year. The stock normally trades between 15 to 16 times earnings which are slated to be between $3.40 and $3.50 for 2013. This fact, coupled with the currently, slightly greater than 1.5% dividend could easily turn 10% in the next 12 months, while giving the investor a stake in a company that they should feel assured about holding for the long term.

Make-up Wizard Rick Baker would love another crack at Star Wars.

Rick Baker  recognition by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most nominated (11 with 7 of them being Oscars) and awarded makeup artist in Oscar history, found Baker reflective on his roughly 40-year career.

Baker says he got excited when he heard that Lucasfilm and Disney are planning new Star Wars episodes - not only because he is a fan but because he harbors a fantasy of returning to the universe he helped create. One of Baker's earliest gigs was working on the creatures of cantina in 1977’s Star Wars.
pic monkey
“So much of the stuff I did in the first Star Wars was very quickly done,” he recalls. “Nobody knew that Star Wars was going to be Star Wars.”

And he hopes the new movies ease up on visual effects, and attempt more practical effects.

“I think the problem that people have with the digital stuff is the problem I have: Just because you can do anything doesn’t mean that you should,” he says. “Instead of having a spaceship battle with three space ships they have 3000 space ships. Everything is so big and there’s so much going on, you lose reality. It takes you out of it."

Baker points to his work on Men in Black 3, now on Blu-ray and DVD today, on which he worked on with five-time Academy Award-winning senior VFX supervisor (and childhood best friend) Ken Ralston.

Baker created 127 characters for the movie but, having learned from past MIBs not to overbuild aliens, these creations were less mechanically complex. And if a few needed their eyes blinking, for example, Imageworks that digitally added that.

Facts you might not have known about "Aladdin"

1. Though Abu and Rajah serve as the best animal friends to lead characters Aladdin and Jasmine, they do not appear – nor are referenced – in the stage show production at Disney California Adventure Park.

2. Alan Menken won two Oscars for his work on Aladdin, one for his original score and the other for his music on “A Whole New World.”

3. In Aladdin and the King of Thieves, Genie makes reference to a boatload of Disney characters, including Chief Powhatan’s famous daughter, as seen in this clip at about the 1:07 mark.

4. Jafar has a fraternal twin sister, a sorceress named Nasira. She serves as the villain for the Aladdin-themed video game, “Disney’s Aladdin in Nasira’s Revenge.” Nasira is voiced by none other than Ariel the Little Mermaid herself, actress Jodi Benson.

5. When the film was first released on VHS in 1993, Aladdin sold a whopping 25 million copies.

6. Scott Weinger, the voice of Aladdin, is best known for his role as Steve, D.J.’s boyfriend, on Full House. He even appeared as a live-action version of the character as an in-joke in this scene, when D.J. imagines Steve in the role of the “street rat.”

7. In an early version of Aladdin, the protagonist was to have a mother. Thus, the Howard Ashman-Alan Menken song called “Proud of Your Boy” was scrapped. However the song is featured in a Clay Aiken-sung music video, highlighted on the 2004 DVD.

8. Dan Castellaneta, the voice of Homer Simpson, brought Genie to life in The Return of Jafar, after Robin Williams experienced a temporary falling-out with The Walt Disney Company. Castellaneta recorded all of his dialogue as Genie for Aladdin and the King of Thieves, but once Williams returned to the role, his voice-work was removed.

9. Princess Jasmine, descending from Arabian heritage, was the first non-Caucasian Disney princess.

10. Aladdin earned over $500 million worldwide during its theatrical release and was the highest-grossing domestic film of 1992.

11. Aladdin boasts an entire section of Tokyo DisneySea, “Arabian Coast,” its design influenced by the environments of India and the Middle East.

12. The Return of Jafar was the first Disney direct-to-video animated feature, released in 1994. This launched a new platform for Disney, allowing them to utilize their characters in even more features.

13. The characters from the Aladdin television series guest-starred on an episode of the late-’90s Hercules animated series.

14. Following Disney’s precedent in re-releasing Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King in the IMAX format, Aladdin was scheduled to return to theaters in that format. Yet that re-release was canceled, even though a trailer had already been shown to IMAX audiences.

15. Aladdin’s appearance was originally modeled after actor Michael J. Fox, though movie-star Tom Cruise and even rapper MC Hammer later served as inspirations.

16. The Beast from the 1991 animated feature makes a “cameo appearance” in Aladdin, in the form of a figurine that the Sultan plays with, along with a whole stack of animals.

17. According to a Travel Channel special that explored the Disneyland Resort and the making of “Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular,” the actor who plays the Genie must go through over an hour-and-a-half of prosthetic, make-up, and other processes to transform into the blue comedic force.

18. The pop version of “A Whole New World” by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart on March 6, 1993. This is the only song from a Disney animated feature to claim that number one honor.

19. In Disneyland’s “it’s a small world,” characters from Aladdin, designed to fit the style of the scene, hover on the Magic Carpet.

20. Both Lea Salonga (Jasmine’s singing voice) and Linda Larkin (Jasmine’s speaking voice) were honored with Disney Legend awards at the 2011 ceremony, held at the D23 Expo, as seen in the clips below.

Can we say, “Flight of the Navigator” remake ?

Who would have thought that “Safety Not Guaranteed,” the low budget sci-fi-ish Sundance hit, would produce some of the most sought after creative talent in the business right now? It was a cute movie and there was certainly some artistry at work, but anyone who thought that the film’s director, Colin Trevorrow, would soon be mentioned in the same breath as the upcoming “Star Wars” sequels (and become attached to a highly touted “Flight of the Navigator” remake) is either lying or psychic. Now comes word that Trevorrow’s “Safety Not Guaranteed” collaborator Derek Connolly (who is also working on ‘Navigator’) has a job almost as vaulted as guiding the future adventures of the Skywalker clan – he’s writing a new movie for Pixar.

In a profile of the writer, they let slip that Connolly is working on an untitled, top-secret feature for director Teddy Newton, who was one of the artists that Brad Bird brought along when he migrated to the studio to make “The Incredibles.” Newton was a designer on Bird’s previous feature “The Iron Giant,” and collaborated with the filmmaker on both “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille” before directing the boldly experimental “Day & Night,” which played in front of “Toy Story 3” and was the studio’s first 3D short. (This was the short with the two two-dimensional characters, one representing night and the other day.)

The report says that Connolly moved to Emeryville, where the main Pixar campus is located (they recently opened a satellite studio in Canada to handle secondary work and short film stuff, which has also been producing beautiful work), shortly after “Safety Not Guaranteed” wowed Sundance. “It's totally different, the way they do things up here,” Connolly told Variety. “You're here everyday. You don't go away for three months and come up with a script. You're involved with a director and it's very collaborative."

What’s interesting is this is the same methodology that turned Michael Arndt, who at the time had just won an Oscar for a similarly low budget movie (“Little Miss Sunshine”), into a Pixar mainstay. When they were wooing Arndt they told him that he would have to be at the studio for a solid six months, then he would be able to take the other six months to write and develop projects for himself, outside of the studio. That didn’t exactly happen and Arndt has become an invaluable member of the Pixar team and the only writer in the studio’s rarified Brain Trust, a kind of governing body/creative collective. What’s also amazing about Arndt is that when he got to the studio he gave a lecture on writing fundamentals where he laid out the mechanical basics for what makes a great story. It’s a brilliant deconstruction of what makes for a great movie and helped the studio immeasurably. But what’s funny, in light of recent events, is thinking about the movie he used as an example during his lecture – it was the original “Star Wars.” Now Arndt is writing “Star Wars – Episode VII” for the studio. Amazing. The Variety report also notes that besides the Pixar mystery project and “Flight of the Navigator,” Connolly is working on a third project for Disney – something called “Hank,” which we also know very little about.

To Direct Disney's 'Frozen' is Writer of 'Wreck-It Ralph'

Jennifer Lee will helm the studio’s 53rd animated feature, which is due to hit screens Nov. 27, 2013.

Lee has been tapped to join Chris Buck to helm Frozen, the studio’s 53rd animated feature which is due to hit screens Nov. 27, 2013.

The movie, which is already in production, voicestars Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel and is set in a kingdom where eternal winter has set in.

According to the studio, "Anna, a fearless optimist, teams up with extreme mountain man Kristoff and his sidekick reindeer Sven on an epic journey to find Anna's sister Elsa, the Snow Queen, and put an end to her icy spell."

Peter Del Vecho (Winnie the Pooh, The Princess and the Frog) is producing. The movie will feature original songs by Broadway's Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.

His wife, Anderson-Lopez, is behind the play In Transit and wrote songs for for 2011’s Winnie the Pooh as well as a stage version of Finding Nemo.)

Buck is a 25-year animation vet who co-directed Disney’s 1999 film Tarzan and Sony Animation’s 2007 film Surf’s Up. Buck was skiing solo on Frozen and having a co-director on animated features is a very common practice. It is somewhat less common, however, for a co-director to come on while a project is already underway.

"Jenn has a real connection to the film and creates dynamic and relatable characters,” said Del Vecho in a statement. “Her sense of comedy, adventure and story structure paired with Chris Buck’s vast experience and incredible instincts create an ideal situation for this film.”

Stephen Colbert Presses Frank Oz on Whether Muppets Have Sex

Oz, who has voiced Cookie Monster, Bert, Miss Piggy and other Muppets, reluctantly tries to answer that question as best he can on Wednesday night's "The Colbert Report."

That was one of the questions that Stephen Colbert really wanted an answer to on Wednesday night's The Colbert Report.

But host Colbert took the opportunity to ask his burning question. He first asked whether Muppets -- specifically, those like Animal, a drummer in a rock band -- have "groupies." Oz then pressed him on what he was really asking.
"Muppet sex," Colbert clarified, to which Oz replied: "You actually said it."
"I insinuated, and you extenuated," Colbert quipped. "You made me be explicit."
He then asked outright: "Do Muppets have sex?" Oz was still flabbergasted: "What?!"
"How do you get new Muppets, is all I'm asking?" Colbert pressed.
Oz finally gave, well, as best an answer as he could.

"I have performed with the Muppets for many years," he said. "And when I did, I didn't make the characters. Many people who are tremendously talented at the workshop make the characters. I can't tell you what actually happens there, but it's all done in the workshop."

Later during the interview, Colbert returned to the Muppets again.
"Bert and Ernie -- that's a straight situation, right?" he asked.
Oz's reply? "Um hmm," he said while nodding.

Oz told Colbert that the original ending -- devised by special effects supervisor Richard Conway -- cost about $1 million and took about a year to create and shoot.
"It was excised because the [audience test] scores were so low that Warner Bros. would not release the movie," he said, adding that he didn't fight the change because "I can feel when an audience is totally against me."
As for why he decided to change the ending for the Blu-ray, Oz said: "I wanted to give Richard Conway his due. His team did all that work. That's why I wanted to do it."

Reports of "Monster University" uncovered

Disney Pixar used an event at the University of Southern California over the weekend to screen the first completed scenes from its Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University.

IGN attended the event and offered up details about the scenes revealed. It appears they used parts that appear early in the film. Below is a sample of their report:

After being kicked out of the scarer program at Monsters University, Mike and Sulley realize they must set aside their rivalry and work together if they’re both going to get back into the scarer program. The only way to do this is to join a fraternity, which in their case is Oozma Kappa, and eventually compete in The Scare Games. Alas, this “OK” frat is far from OK. In a nod to underdog flicks such as Revenge of the Nerds and The House Bunny, Mike and Sulley quickly discover that their frat is for the very, very uncool kids.

First, there’s Don Carlton, a middle-aged monster who’s gone back to school after being laid off from his job. Then there are the twins Terry and Terri, a pair of squabbling Siamese twin monsters. Art is the equivalent of the ubiquitous dorm stoner, a “New Age philosophy major” who doesn’t exactly scream effort. Finally, there’s Squishy, a nice blob who looks exactly as his namesake suggests. These outcasts refer to their frat house living room as “Party Central” (and, no, it isn’t).

Mike and Sulley are less than impressed with their new frat brothers, and realize it's pretty much up to them if Oozma Kappa is going to make it into the Scare Games. After retiring to their room, which is tiny and has bunk beds, Mike and Sulley investigate strange noises coming from the basement. They gingerly make their way downstairs where they discover their frat brothers, cloaked and their features discernible only be candlelight.

A creepy initiation ritual begins but is quickly interrupted by the lights being turned on, revealing the basement to be a laundry room. Squishy's matronly mom calls downstairs to her son, revealing that the OK frat house is, in fact, Squishy's mom's house. She proceeds to do the laundry while the boys finish their initiation rite for Mike and Sulley.

Last year, alumni of the former Comedy Warehouse on Pleasure Island were reunited at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for a limited run in “The Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special.” For seven short days, the show played to capacity crowds at the park’s ABC Sound Studio.

Well, today I have good news and better news! The good news is, “The Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special” is returning by popular demand. Better still, the show is moving to a larger venue, the Premiere Theater, and its run is being extended to 14 days. Now, even more Comedy Warehouse fans and park guests will have a chance to participate in this uniquely hilarious live show.

For the uninitiated, “The Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special” presents the best of family-friendly improvisational comedy, as performers take suggestions from the audience and add their own brand of humor right on the spot, inventing holiday songs, stories, poems and scenarios.

“’The Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special’ is like a family reunion of the Cast of the Comedy Warehouse,” said Show Director Chris Oyen. “We’re so happy to be able to bring everyone together again for the holiday season and to put on this show. It’s a gift from our family to yours.”

“The Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special” runs from December 23 through January 5 and is included in regular Disney’s Hollywood Studios park admission.
