Walt Disney Studios UPDATE: Pirates 5; The Muppets; Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Guardians of the Galaxy; and Maleficent

In today’s dispatch from The Walt Disney Studios, I’ve got some very exciting tidbits about our 2014-2015 film slate, including new release dates.

Kermit, Miss Piggy and the Muppets gang will return to the big screen on March 21, 2014, in a sequel to 2011’s The Muppets. Director James Bobin is returning to the helm, and among the stellar cast are Ricky Gervais and Ty Burrell.

From the world of Marvel, we announced that Captain America: The Winter Soldier, dated for April 4, 2014, and Guardians of the Galaxy, due out August 1, 2014, will also be released in 3D. The action-packed Captain America sequel will pick up where Marvel’s The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) struggles to embrace his role in the modern world. Guardians of the Galaxy will feature an unlikely cast of characters who must team up in order to defeat a cosmic force of epic proportions.

Maleficent, the untold story of Disney’s most beloved villain from the 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, moves from its previously announced spring release to a July 7, 2014, debut in theaters. Produced by Joe Roth and directed by Robert Stromberg, the 3D film stars Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, Sharlto Copley and Elle Fanning.

From producer Damon Lindelof and director Brad Bird, 1952 will be released on December 19, 2014. The script is by Lindelof and Bird and will star George Clooney.

For 2015, we’re thrilled about the fifth installment of the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Johnny Depp will reclaim his iconic role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the film set to hit theaters on July 10, 2015. It’ll be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and the screenplay is by Jeff Nathanson.
