New Film About ‘Mary Poppins’ Won’t Feature Julie Andrews

Andrews will be portrayed by another actress in the coming “Saving Mr. Banks,” a movie about the pre-production of “Mary Poppins,” with Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as “Poppins” author P.L. Travers.

Victoria Summer plays a young Julie Andrews in the film, but she’s only glimpsed briefly and doesn’t have any scripted dialogue. In the script, the scene with the faux Andrews takes place at the world premiere for “Mary Poppins.”

The movie "Saving Mr. Banks" is due out Dec. 20, 2013.

When Speakeasy asked Andrews about “Saving Ms. Banks,” she was well aware of the movie, but said that she had no involvement with the production.

“[Ms. Thompson] and I were going to speak on the phone, but I’m not sure if I was out of town or she was…of course I’m available if she’s like to talk, but it’s probably done by now. Can’t wait to see it. I’m a great admirer of hers,” Andrews said.

Andrews told Speakeasy that an early encounter she had with Travers took her by surprise: “P.L. Travers called when she heard that I was cast as Poppins and I literally just had a baby, Emma. And the day after, the phone rang and she said ‘Hello, this is P.L. Travers.’ And I said, ‘Oh my God, Ms. Travers, how nice to talk to you.’ And she said, ‘Talk to me—I hear you’re doing Mary Poppins.’ And I said, ‘I’m feeling a little out of it right now. I just had a baby.’ And she said, ‘Of course, you’re far too pretty [to play Poppins], but you’ve got the nose for it.’”

Summer, the actress who plays Andrews in “Saving Mr. Banks,” says she couldn’t be happier to take on the role, even though it’s fleeting appearance. “She has a small part and only one scene for the entire movie!” Summer said in an email. “I did speak on camera – the lines were not scripted but who knows what the final edit will contain.”
