There is a Great Disturbance in the Force - Disney Closes LucasArts

In a move that doesn't seem to surprise most who follow the world of gaming Disney has decided to close the LucasArts studio. Founded in 1982 the publisher had some great successes with "The Secret of Monkey Island" and in recent years lukewarm success with "The Force Unleashed."

According to the official press release from Disney:
"After evaluating our position in the games market, we've decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company's risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we've had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles."
According to sources about 150 people were laid off, and work on both of the studio's projects "Star Wars: First Assault" and "Star Wars 1313" have ceased. Although those titles are seemingly cancelled there is speculation that those titles may be licensed out to another developer. Disney will still use the LucasArts name to license games.
