A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas Launches at Magic Kingdom Park

A Pirate’s Adventure: Treasures of the Seven Seas has officially set sail at Magic Kingdom Park.

Inspired by the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise, this interactive quest lets you turn into one of Captain Jack’s pirate recruits, arms you with magic talismans and treasure maps, and lets you embark on one of five different pirate raids throughout Adventureland.

The task is to prove your pirate worth by collecting valuable treasures while fending off some of Captain Jack’s enemies, including the Royal Navy and Captain Barbossa.

The quest is included in theme park admission and guests can embark on more than one raid if they wish. Looks like it’s going to be an amazing experience!

Hong Kong Disneyland Unveils New Attraction

Mystic Manor, the final chapter of Hong Kong Disneyland's current expansion project officially opened on May 17, 2013 to attract large numbers of tourists. <Photo/Xinhua>

Featuring one of the most sophisticated systems ever built by Disney, the key attraction of Mystic Manor takes visitors through adventures of eccentric explorer and art collector Lord Henry Mystic, who invites guests to board the mystic magneto-electric carriage for a tour of his private museum located within his Victorian manor house.

The carriage takes different routes to different rooms, and those holding annual passes might come back a few times to see them all without repeating.

"The characters (in Mystic Manor) seem to come to life. I really enjoyed it and I want to take one more ride," said a young visitor.

Besides Mystic Manor, there are also other mystic attractions like Garden of Wonders and Explorer's Club Restaurant.

The ancient sculptures and paintings in Garden of Wonders create amazing three-dimensional illusions and offer a great background for visitors to take photos.

The Explorer's Club Restaurant serve cuisine from different countries.

After years of expansion, the Hong Kong Disneyland has grown in size. The additional entertainment projects are designed to draw more visitors and bring greater profits to the park.

D23 Expo 2013: Academy Award-winning Composers Richard Sherman and Alan Menken to Perform Epic Concert

Richard Sherman and Alan Menken at D23 Expo 2013!

Here's some exciting news for the D23 Expo 2013!

DISNEY LEGENDS RICHARD M. SHERMAN AND ALAN MENKEN
JOIN FORCES FOR A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME CONCERT

The two Academy Award®-winning composers share the stage for one night only performing “The Disney Songbook” at the D23 Expo 2013, Saturday, August 10

For one night only, two of the world’s most celebrated songwriters and composers will take to the stage for “Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken: The Disney Songbook.” The concert will take place at the D23 Expo 2013 at the Anaheim Convention Center in the D23 Expo Arena on Saturday, August 10.

Together Sherman and Menken have won a combined 10 Academy Awards for their work with Disney, and have composed music and songs for more than three dozen Disney feature films, over two dozen Disney Park attractions and half a dozen Disney musicals on Broadway.

“I can’t express how excited I am that my esteemed friend Alan Menken and I will be sharing the same bill for the very first time,” said Sherman. “Alan is an incredible talent, and I know we’re both thrilled to be performing for Disney’s most ardent fans—they’re the best and I can’t wait to be a part of what promises to be a very special night for all of us.”

“Richard Sherman and I share so many things; our cherished association with The Walt Disney Company, the blessing of having the opportunity to share our musical talents with "children of all ages" and a genuine mutual admiration—but one thing we've never gotten to share is a concert stage,” said Menken. “This summer at the D23 Expo 2013, we will do just that. And I can't think of anyone I'd prefer to share that stage with. Richard, along with his brother Robert, wrote songs that filled my formative years with joy and fantasy. And, all these years later, I can say with complete honesty that there is no one I've met in our business who is more warm and generous than my friend and fellow songwriter, Richard Sherman.”

Admission to the concert will be on a first-come, first-served basis and is included in the price of a ticket to the D23 Expo. In addition to the 4,000-seat D23 Expo Arena, the concert will be simulcast into a 2,000-seat overflow theater inside the Convention Center.

Richard M. Sherman and his brother Robert B. Sherman composed some of the most beloved songs in the Disney canon. The Disney Legends won two Oscars® for their work on Mary Poppins, and during their decades–long association with Disney they wrote more than 200 songs for 27 films and two dozen television productions. They made unforgettable contributions to such Disney films as The Parent Trap, The Jungle Book, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, and the entire Winnie the Pooh series, as well as the family classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. They also penned beloved songs for Disney Parks including the theme songs for Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, it’s a small world, and Carousel of Progress. Richard wrote the song “Make Way for Tomorrow Today” for the blockbuster film Iron Man 2, and is working on a new stage musical based on Walt Disney’s 1967 animated film classic The Jungle Book, premiering this June at the Goodman Theater in Chicago.

With eight Academy Awards, Alan Menken has received more Oscars than any living person. He has written songs and scores for some of the world’s most beloved films: Tangled (Oscar nominee), Enchanted (three Oscar nominations) The Little Mermaid (two Oscar wins), Beauty and the Beast (two Oscar wins), Aladdin (two Oscar wins), Pocahontas (two Oscar wins), Hercules (Oscar nominee), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Oscar nominee), Little Shop of Horrors (Oscar nominee), Home on the Range and Newsies. His song “Star Spangled Man,” was the patriotic anthem of the 2011 hit film Captain America: The First Avenger.

Menken’s Broadway successes include his 2012 Tony Award® for Newsies, plus The Little Mermaid (Tony Award nominee), Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors, and Sister Act (Tony Award nominee). His other stage productions include King David, God Bless You Mr. Rosewater, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and his latest stage production Aladdin: The New Musical, opening next year. At Disney Parks, Menken added an exclusive ballad (“To Be Free”) to his song score for Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular at Disney California Adventure and penned “Compass of Your Heart,” the catchy theme song for the attraction Sinbad’s Storybook Voyage at Tokyo DisneySea

Disney-Pixar's "Monster University" Reveals the Final (Exam) Trailer

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right. Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”). Check out disney.com/MonstersU, like us at facebook.com/PixarMonstersUniversity, and follow us on twitter.com/disneypixar.

The film opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2013, and will be shown in 3D in select theaters and is rated G by the MPAA.

Production Begins on Walt Disney Pictures’ “Million Dollar Arm” Starring Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm, stars in AMC's "Mad Men"

Principal photography has begun on Walt Disney Pictures’ “Million Dollar Arm,” starring Jon Hamm. Directed by Craig Gillespie (“Lars and the Real Girl,” “Fright Night”), the film is produced by Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, through their Mayhem Pictures, and Joe Roth, under his Roth Films banner, with Palak Patel and Kevin Halloran serving as executive producers. Tom McCarthy (“Win Win,” “The Visitor”) wrote the screenplay. The film also stars Bill Paxton (“Haywire,” “Hatfields & McCoys”), Lake Bell (“What Happens in Vegas,” “It’s Complicated”), Suraj Sharma (“Life of Pi”), Aasif Mandvi (“The Daily Show,” “Margin Call”), Madhur Mittal (“Slumdog Millionaire”), Pitobash (“Three Idiots,” “Shanghai”) and Academy Award®–winner Alan Arkin. A.R. Rahman (“127 Hours,” “Slumdog Millionaire”) is scoring the film. “Million Dollar Arm” will shoot on locations in India, Georgia and Los Angeles.

Based on a true story, Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” follows JB Bernstein, a once-successful sports agent who now finds himself edged out by bigger, slicker competitors. He and his partner Aash (Aasif Mandvi) will have to close their business down for good if JB doesn’t come up with something fast. Late one night, while watching cricket being played in India on TV, JB comes up with an idea so radical it just might work. Why not go to there and find the next baseball pitching sensation? Setting off for Mumbai with nothing but a gifted but cantankerous scout (Alan Arkin) in tow, JB stages a televised, nationwide competition called “Million Dollar Arm” where 40,000 hopefuls compete before two 18-year-old finalists, Rinku and Dinesh (Suraj Sharma, Madhur Mittal), emerge as winners. JB brings them back to the United States to train with legendary pitching coach Tom House (Bill Paxton). The goal: get the boys signed to a major league team.

Not only is the game itself difficult to master, but life in the U.S. with a committed bachelor makes things even more complicated—for all of them. While Rinku and Dinesh learn the finer points of baseball and American culture, they in turn teach JB the true meaning of teamwork and commitment. Ultimately, what began as a purely commercial venture becomes something more and leads JB to find the one thing he was never looking for at all—a family.

The producing team of Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray, producers of such notable sports movies as “Secretariat,” “Miracle” and “The Rookie,” joins forces with veteran producer Joe Roth (“Oz The Great and Powerful,” “Snow White and the Huntsman,” “Alice in Wonderland”) to bring Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” to the screen.

Director Craig Gillespie gained widespread recognition with the critically acclaimed “Lars and the Real Girl,” starring Oscar®-nominated Ryan Gosling. He also directed “Fright Night,” starring Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, David Tennant, Imogen Poots, and Toni Collette. For television, Gillespie produced and directed the highly acclaimed Showtime series “United States of Tara.” His direction of the pilot episode earned Toni Collette both an Emmy® Award and a Golden Globe® Award.

Golden Globe® winner Jon Hamm is perhaps best-known for his nuanced portrayal of high-powered, philandering advertising executive Don Draper on AMC’s award-winning drama series “Mad Men.” His previous film credits include “Friends with Kids,” which he also produced; “Bridesmaids,” “The Town,” “Sucker Punch,” “Howl,” “Shrek Forever After,” as the voice of “Brogan,” “The Day the Earth Stood Still,” “Ira & Abby,” “Kissing Jessica Stein” and “We Were Soldiers.” He recently completed HBO’s “Clear History” with Larry David for director Greg Mottola and the BBC miniseries “A Young Doctor’s Notebook,” opposite Daniel Radcliffe, which he also executive produced.

Alan Arkin, one of the most respected artists of the stage and screen, won an Academy Award® for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 2006 hit “Little Miss Sunshine.” For his role, Arkin also won an Independent Spirit Award and a BAFTA Award, and shared in a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award® for Outstanding Motion Picture Cast, in addition to receiving an individual SAG Award® nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Arkin most recently earned Oscar®, BAFTA and Golden Globe® Award nominations for his supporting performance in director Ben Affleck’s Oscar®-winning Best Picture “Argo,” which also won the BAFTA Award for Best Picture.

Talented, multi-faceted actor Bill Paxton has starred in many audience-pleasing hit films, including “Titanic,” “Apollo 13,” “Aliens” “Twister,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Spy Kids, 2&3” and “Tombstone.” He was recently seen in “The Colony,” “Shanghai Calling” and “Haywire.” On television, Paxton is well known for the series “Big Love,” for which he was Golden Globe® nominated, and recently starred in the award-winning miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys” opposite Kevin Costner.

Lake Bell wrote, produced, starred in and directed her most recent film, “In A World…,” which garnered Bell the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance this year. Bell was also seen at this year's Sundance Film Festival in the film “Black Rock,” opening in May 2013, directed by Katie Aselton. Other film credits include, among others, “A Good Old Fashioned Orgy,” Paramount’s hit comedy “No Strings Attached,” Nancy Meyer's “It's Complicated,” “What Happens in Vegas” and “Pride and Glory.”

Suraj Sharma won acclaim for his portrayal of Pi Patel in Ang Lee’s acclaimed movie “Life of Pi.” With no previous experience, Lee cast Sharma for the role of Pi, following an extensive, months-long search throughout India. For his work in “Life of Pi,” Sharma earned a Critics’ Choice nomination for Best Young Actor, an Empire Award nomination for Best Male Newcomer and won the Sierra Youth in Film Award from the Las Vegas Film Critics as well as the MTV Movie Award for Best Scared as Sh**t Performance, among others.

Aasif Mandvi, well known as a correspondent on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” is an accomplished actor who will next be seen in “The Internship,” starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Recent films include “Premium Rush,” “Ruby Sparks” and “Margin Call.”

Madhur Mittal is best known for his performance as Salim in the acclaimed film “Slumdog Millionaire,” which won the Academy Award® for Best Picture of 2008 and for which he won the Screen Actors Guild Award® for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Pitobash is a Hindi film actor known for his roles in “I Am Kalam,” “Shor in the City” and “Shanghai.” At the age of 12, Pitobash was honored with the “National Balshree Award” from the president of India in the field of creative performance. He later went on to join Bollywood as an actor.

Disney’s “Million Dollar Arm” is slated for a 2014 release.

Could Be Acoustical Doom for The Disney Concert Hall

Architect Frank Gehry has voiced concerns that the new Los Angeles subway, scheduled for construction in two to three years, may disturb concerts in his famous Disney Hall. The planned subway line would run 125 feet below the venue’s parking garage and recent simulations have shown that the rumblings could be audible inside the concert hall. Gehry has called for the review of previous noise projections for the metro project, which two years ago predicted no audible impact on his design. “It would be a disaster for Disney Hall,” Gehry told the LA Times. “The flag is up and we should go over it and make sure.”

The acoustic experiment was conducted April 23rd by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in Thayer Hall, a below-ground performance and recording space at the Colburn School. This small venue, near 2nd Street and Grand Avenue, is closer than Disney Hall to the $1.37-billion subway’s route, which will include a stretch beneath 2nd Street from Hope Street to Central Avenue.

Fred Vogler, a recording engineer who oversees recording sessions and concert-taping for the Colburn School and the L.A. Philharmonic said that “they played a solo piano piece through a loudspeaker and had subwoofers that simulated a passing train. The test was several minutes long. Then they said, ‘Is anybody troubled by the train sounds?’ We said, ‘Well, we heard them, if that’s what you’re asking.’ It set off a lot of concerns.”

Gehry heard about the test’s results from Vogler and communicated his concerns to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors member Zev Yaroslavsky as well as others, calling for a reevaluation of previous noise projections for Disney Hall.

Metro’s Chief Executive Art Leahy explained that the simulation did not represent actual predicted sonic impact of the trains; instead, it was just a part of determining how precise noise abatement devices along the metro tracks must be to create no additional noise in performance spaces near the subway line. Metro has even hired an acoustic expert in addition to noise abatement consultants to help with the process.

“We are not about to do anything which in any fashion, however slightly, impairs or damages […] Disney Hall or any other feature in that area,” Leahy said. “They are critically important, and we are simply not going to build something that reduces the utility or benefit of those facilities. That’s a blanket statement, no conditions or qualifiers on it.”

A meeting will be arranged that includes all cultural organizations adjacent to the subway line interested in receiving an update from Metro officials. Disney Hall’s original acoustical designer, Yasuhisa Toyota, and its original noise abatement engineer, Charles M. Salter Associates, will go over the numbers again as soon as they are released to make sure that the ambient noise level – the sound when nothing is happening – inside the hall does not exceed 25 decibels. If not, Yaroslavsky says that “Metro is going to have to adjust accordingly.”

Disney Close to Adopting Producers Guild of America's Producers Mark

With Disney coming on board, the Mark, which signifies a producers' contributions to a film, will have been endorsed by every studio except Warners and Paramount.

Walt Disney Studios is in the final stages of negotiations with the Producers Guild of America to adopt the Producers Mark, the PGA’s sign that a credited producer actually has done the work of producing a given movie.

The mark is represented by the lower case letters p.g.a. following a producer’s name. And the PGA has made winning studio approval of the practice one of its major initiatives. According to sources familiar with the discussions, Alan Horn, who took over as chairman of the studio in June 2012, has supported adopting the mark.

With Disney agreeing to use the mark, Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures are the remaining studios that have not yet adopted the practice, but talks with those studios are ongoing, and they are expected to eventually come on board.

The mark began appearing in film credits for the first time in the fall on such titles as The Weinstein Co.'s Lawless and Silver Linings Playbook. By November, several studios -- Universal, Sony and Fox -- had agreed to adopt the practice. DreamWorks Animation next came on board, and in early 2013, DreamWorks joined as well. While the companies involved have agreed to participate in the process, the mark itself is added to a film only when an individual producer voluntary requests it and offers evidence of his work.

The PGA, a trade organization representing more than 5,600 producers in film and TV, long has sought to raise the status of working producers by insisting that their contributions to a film receive proper credit. The mark was devised to distinguish working producers from others – like financiers or managers – who might contractually receive a producing credit on a film even though they did not actually perform the functions of a producer during preproduction, principal photography or post.

To receive the Producers Mark, during postproduction a studio or production company submits a film’s credits to the PGA, which then asks eligible producers to fill out a form describing their functions on the film. A PGA panel of established producers, using that information as well as third-party verification, then decides which producers rate a p.g.a. designation for their contributions to the film.

Dylan Sprouse says Disney tried to steal the brothers' 'Zack and Cody' spin-off idea

No one denies that the Disney Channel takes kids and makes them into stars. But that doesn't always work out so well for the kids. Dylan Sprouse -- a star of the hit shows "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody" and "The Suite Life on Deck" -- has now said that he and his twin brother, Cole, left Disney after the channel tried to steal their idea for a spin-off.

From 2005 to 2008 and 2008 to 2010, the Sprouse twins were the stars of two of Disney's biggest hit shows. They were well paid too, making more than any other Disney stars except Selena Gomez.

And then they just walked away.

Why would the two young actors leave behind the money and fame so suddenly? First of all, the main reason was definitely college -- unlike most Disney kids, the Sprouse boys actually wanted an education. There was, however, another big reason why the twins were done with Disney: The network wouldn't let them be producers on a spin-off series that the Sprouses came up with.

According to Dylan Sprouse in an interview posted on YouTube, he and Cole had come up with a full spin-off series that would keep the show going even in their absence. They would return to Boston, initially to live with their mother, back in the hotel. A young kid would then move into the hotel with his single dad, and the twins would teach him their ways. After that, Zack would get a job selling cars and Cody would leave for college.

Disney said no. "When we had pitched our idea, it was kind of this situation where they had almost laughed in our faces," Dylan explains in the video.

Disney was not done with the Sprouse twins yet though. One year later, someone from the channel met with the two to see if they would be interested in a "brand-new" spin-off idea. The Disney plan had the twins moving to Miami, where they would live in a hotel with Selena Gomez. Then, a kid with a single dad would move in and learn the hotel ways of Zack and Cody. After awhile, Zack would get a job selling cars, and Cody would leave for college.

Sound familiar?

Needless to say, the Sprouses weren't too interested. "They pitched us our idea -- in Miami, with Selena Gomez," Dylan says. "And Cole and I turned to each other and we basically laughed in their faces and walked out. And that was the last meeting we had with Disney."

It may have been a good choice.

‘Kon-Tiki’ Directors Boarding ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5′

Disney has already set release date of July 10, 2015

Disney has selected “Kon-Tiki” helmers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg for the directing duties for “Pirates Of The Caribbean 5.”

Disney is in final negotiations for the Norwegian duo to come on board the tentpole with Johnny Depp returning as Captain Jack Sparrow and Jerry Bruckheimer producing. The studio has already set a July10, 2015, worldwide release date.

Disney is planning to begin shooting late this year or early next year. Ronning and Sandberg, who were nominated for this year’s foreign language Oscar for “Kon-Tiki,” which was shot almost entirely on water — an experience that probably made them attractive candidates for the “Pirates” gig.

The Mouse House tapped “Catch Me if You Can” scribe Jeff Nathanson early this year to pen the “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” script. That screenplay has been delivered but plot details remain under wraps as do whether actors from past installments such as Geoffrey Rush or Keira Knightley will reprise their roles.

Summer starts off with laughs on ABC Family’s New Comedy Wednesdays featuring Season Three of “Melissa and Joey,” followed by the Season Two premiere of “Baby Daddy” and the series premiere of reality show “Dancing Fools.”

In the Season Three premiere of “Melissa and Joey,” entitled “Works for Me,” airing Wednesday, May 29 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT), Joe pursues a new job opportunity, sending Mel into a panic when she realizes he may actually leave. But the job isn’t quite what Joe expected, causing him to reevaluate his place in the house and Mel’s scheming to prove how much everyone needs him. Meanwhile Lennox thinks her artist boyfriend, Zander, may have found another muse, and Ryder’s class trip has an unexpected outcome.

The laughs continue in the Season Two premiere of “Baby Daddy,” airing from 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT. In the episode, entitled “I’m Not That Guy,” Ben thinks he might like Riley and tries to convince her he’s changed his playboy ways. Riley invites Ben to be her date at a work party, but Ben’s efforts to prove he’s dependable fall short. Danny hopes to come to Riley’s rescue, but arrives only to find Riley getting friendly with another man (guest star Matt Dallas). Meanwhile, Tucker schemes to go out with a model, and Bonnie attempts to get to know a handsome stranger...with a little help from Emma.

Then, from 9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT, get ready for some dancing hilarity with “Dancing Fools,” from the producers of “The Singing Bee” and “Oh Sit!” and hosted by “Baby Daddy’s” Melissa Peterman. It’s the ultimate comedy reality studio dance show, featuring the best, funniest, most outrageous and memorable user-generated dances caught on camera and presented in front of a live studio audience. From viral videos to original dances to tribute videos to dance bloopers, we gather dance videos from all over and have fun with them. We also invite the dancers of two user-generated videos to recreate their moves in studio for a chance to win $10,000.

“Melissa and Joey” stars Melissa Joan Hart, Joey Lawrence, Taylor Spreitler and Nick Robinson, and is executive-produced by Bob Young & David Kendall, Paula Hart, Melissa Joan Hart and Joey Lawrence. Guest stars in “Works for Me” include Sterling Knight and Hayley Erin, plus an appearance by “OMG Insider” hosts Thea Andrews and Kevin Frazier.
