Hulu expands family entertainment offerings with Walt Disney Studios

HULU EXPANDS OFFERING OF FAMILY FAVORITES AND BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES IN FIRST LICENSING AGREEMENT FOR THEATRICAL FEATURES WITH THE WALT DISNEY STUDIOS

Beloved Disney Favorites Including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mulan, Pocahontas and more Arrive Exclusively in SVOD on Hulu

Hulu has reached its first licensing agreement for theatrical features with The Walt Disney Studios. The new, multi-year deal grants the streaming service the exclusive subscription video-on-demand rights to a collection of hit movies and family favorites from Disney’s library of blockbuster films.

Through the agreement, Hulu becomes the exclusive subscription video on demand home to a selection of Disney favorites including The Nightmare Before Christmas, Mulan, Pocahontas, Hercules, Sister Act and Air Bud, which are all available to stream on Hulu now.

The agreement will also make over 50 popular titles available to stream on Hulu for the first time. Titles including Con Air, Step Up, Gone in 60 Seconds, Pearl Harbor, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, The Mighty Ducks, as well as Disney blockbusters that the whole family can enjoy including Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan, The Emperor's New Groove, Muppet Treasure Island and The Princess and the Frog, will become available on Hulu over the coming months.

“The Disney brand is synonymous with beloved movies that the whole family can enjoy,” said Craig Erwich, SVP, Head of Content, Hulu. “Expanding our offering of top-rated kids and family programming has been a top priority for us, and we know viewers will love watching these films over and over again on our service.”

The films will join top-rated kids programming from Disney’s suite of networks, and more than 20 Disney Channel Original Movies, that were added to Hulu through a comprehensive deal with The Disney-ABC Television Group announced earlier this year.

Carrie Fisher (October 21, 1956 – December 27, 2016)

Jedi Mouseketeer and the Sorcerer Radio Network of sites and podcasts are saddened by the passing of Carrie Fisher. Our hearts go out to her family and friends. She was an inspiration to many of us and it has been great to see her reprise her iconic role as Princess/General Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. May she rest in peace. May The Force be with you, always. - Aljon Go, JediMouseketeer.com

Carrie Fisher died at the age of 60 on December 27, 2016, four days after going into cardiac arrest near the end of a transatlantic flight from London to Los Angeles.

Fisher (October 21, 1956 – December 27, 2016), known for playing Princess Leia in the Star Wars saga, was the daughter of singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds. Other film roles included Shampoo (1975), The Blues Brothers (1980), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), The 'Burbs (1989), and When Harry Met Sally... (1989).

Fisher was also known for her semi-autobiographical novels, including Postcards from the Edge and the screenplay for the film of the same name, as well as her autobiographical one-woman play and its nonfiction book, Wishful Drinking, based on the show. She additionally served as a script doctor, working on other writers' screenplays. In later years, she earned praise for speaking publicly about her experiences with bipolar disorder and drug addiction.

On December 23, 2016, Fisher was on a commercial flight from London to Los Angeles when she went into cardiac arrest fifteen minutes before the plane landed at Los Angeles International Airport. A passenger seated near Fisher reported that she had stopped breathing. Another passenger performed CPR on Fisher until paramedics arrived at the scene. After being taken by ambulance to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, she was placed on a ventilator.

Fisher died four days later on December 27 at 8:55 a.m. (PST) in Los Angeles at 60 years old. Fisher's daughter, Billie Lourd, confirmed her mother's death in a statement given to the press shortly afterward by a family spokesperson, Simon Halls. Fisher is survived by her daughter, her mother Debbie Reynolds, her brother Todd Fisher and their half-sisters Joely Fisher and Tricia Leigh Fisher along with her beloved dog Gary. News of Fisher's passing spread quickly online where fans from around the world responded with tributes and condolences. Many of her Star Wars co-stars and directors also shared their thoughts on Fisher's passing.

In her book, Wishful Drinking, Fisher wrote about her eventual obituary: "I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra." Several obituaries and retrospectives featured the quote. *Source Wikipedia.

Lunar New Year Celebration Presents New Nighttime ‘Hurry Home’ Feature, Asian Food and Entertainment, and Disney Magic at Disney California Adventure Park

Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Mulan and Mushu will join guests for a bigger-than-ever Lunar New Year Celebration at Disney California Adventure Park, from Friday, Jan. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 5, 2017. This joyous celebration for the Year of the Rooster expands to 17 days, with colorful live performances, fun-filled activities, beautiful decor, Disney characters in their Lunar New Year costumes, and special food and merchandise offerings.

Guests at the Lunar New Year Celebration will discover new Disney magic as they experience Asian culture through a variety of live performances, including Chinese acrobats and authentic musicians. Each night prior to “World of Color,” a new feature called “Hurry Home” will tell the tale of a journey home for Lunar New Year. The six-minute feature is presented in sequences, utilizing projected animation along with the lighting, special effects and powerful fountains of “World of Color.”

As “Hurry Home” unfolds, guests will get to follow along on the journey of a Little Lantern returning home for the annual celebration of good luck and fortune. Little Lantern encounters three “dream sequences,” featuring appearances by Mulan and the dragon Mushu. “Hurry Home” employs two contrasting animation styles, with fully rendered CG animation and sequences inspired by traditional Chinese paper cut-out style animation. The story is scored with music created for the opening ceremony of Shanghai Disney Resort by Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).

Lunar New Year, traditionally celebrated within Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese cultures, commemorates the moment when both the sun and the moon begin their journey for another year. Highlights of the Lunar New Year Celebration at Disney California Adventure include:

  • Three new Asian marketplaces offering foods inspired by Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese cultures
  • Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Mulan and Mushu, dressed in their Lunar New Year attire to welcome guests and join them for photos
  • Live performances with an impressive array of authentic performers, acrobats, musicians and more
  • A New Year’s Wishing Wall, where guests may add their own wishes for a wonderful future
  • Lunar New Year décor, including beautiful ornamental lanterns and banners wishing guests a Happy Lunar New Year in English, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese
  • Lunar New Year commemorative merchandise, including a specially designed t-shirt, pin and the traditional red envelopes for gift-giving

For a limited time only, Disneyland Resort guests may celebrate the tradition, sights, sounds and tastes of Lunar New Year with a touch of Disney magic, only at Disney California Adventure. Guests may check for daily entertainment schedules as they become available, at www.Disneyland.com/LunarNewYear.

For 17 days, guests will enjoy live performances, fun-filled activities, Disney characters in their Lunar New Year costumes, and foods inspired by Asian cultures. Among the new entertainment offerings is “Hurry Home,” a special six-minute water and projection show on Paradise Bay that follows the journey of Little Lantern on its way home for the annual celebration of good luck and fortune. The story features a score highlighted by an original arrangement of the music created for Shanghai Disney Resort, by Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). “Hurry Home,” precedes the nightly “World of Color” water, music and film spectacular on Paradise Bay.

Princess Elena and Super Heroes: In 2017, guests will find more delightful characters than ever before at the Disneyland Resort. These new additions are sure to offer guests many opportunities to create magical memories:

  • Princess Elena – From toddlers to teens, guests are greeting the brave and adventurous teenager from the Disney Channel series “Elena of Avalor.” Princess Elena is the first Disney Princess inspired by diverse Latin American cultures.
  • Super Heroes in Hollywood Land – In summer 2017, Disney California Adventure welcomes the Guardians of the Galaxy to join other Super Heroes such as Spiderman and Captain America who will be greeting guests throughout 2017 at the Hollywood Backlot.

At Disneyland Park:

  • Main Street Electrical Parade: Guests will be dazzled as this beloved and iconic parade returns to its original home, Disneyland Park, for a limited time, from Jan. 20-June 18, 2017. The legendary parade, which premiered in 1972, will once again light up the night, sparking magic, wonder and, for some, a sense of nostalgia with thousands of twinkling lights, the synthesized music of “Baroque Hoedown” and treasured characters from heartwarming Disney stories. Appearing in Disneyland Park for the first time in more than 20 years, the parade will be led by the familiar whimsical train pulling a giant drum unit proudly proclaiming “Disneyland Presents… Main Street Electrical Parade.” More details are at DisneylandNews.com.
  • Season of the Force: Star Wars and Disney fans will enjoy out-of-this-galaxy experiences during Season of the Force in Tomorrowland. At Hyperspace Mountain, guests climb aboard the re-imagined Space Mountain attraction and join in an X-wing Starfighter battle as they race through the darkness. Inside Star Wars Launch Bay, guests explore replicas of movie props and models from the new film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and have the opportunity to meet favorite characters like Chewbacca. Young Padawans discover whether they have the makings of a true Jedi at Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, an interactive experience where they may face villains such as the ominous Darth Vader and the Seventh Sister from the Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels.
  • Moana: Having sailed among the islands of Oceania on her quest with the demigod Maui, Moana now has come ashore to visit with guests in Adventureland. The daring teenage heroine stars in “Moana,” the new blockbuster film from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Seasonal Delights:

For many guests, the Halloween and Holidays seasons are made complete with a visit to the Disneyland Resort.

  • Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort – From mid-September through October, guests will celebrate Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort with ghoulish delight, reveling in the spooky décor, creepy treats, and chilling seasonal overlays of Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy. Guests of the separate-ticket Mickey’s Halloween Party will go trick-or-treating throughout Disneyland and enjoy an exclusive Mickey’s Halloween Party parade and fireworks.
  • Holidays at the Disneyland Resort – From November through early January, Holidays at the Disneyland Resort is in festive full swing. Many guests make it a tradition to come for the Holidays and visit the parks for Disney-themed treats, snowfall on Main Street U.S.A., glistening décor and holiday entertainment. Special holiday attractions include “it’s a small world” Holiday, Jingle Cruise, and Haunted Mansion Holiday, celebrating the collision of Halloween and Christmas.

New Star Wars Experiences Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Starting Dec. 16, guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be able to see AWR (Advance Weapons Research) Troopers from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” when they join the popular daytime stage show “Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away.” Photo courtesy of Disney Parks.
Here's the news discussed today by Aljon Go of Sorcerer Radio's WDW Tiki Room show.

Lineup includes new elements from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” updates to fan favorites and an ultimate tour of Star Wars experiences

A galaxy of new Star Wars experiences is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios beginning mid-December. The announcement – made today at Walt Disney World Resort – noted that some of the coming-soon additions are inspired by “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” that opens in theaters worldwide on Dec. 16.

Guests, including fans of the epic space saga, will find new entertainment, special displays inside Star Wars Launch Bay, a first-ever themed tour and more at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Premiering this Month:

Star Wars Launch Bay – a multi-sensory space celebrating all things Star Wars – is now updated with authentic replicas from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” joining other Star Wars memorabilia in the preview gallery. Making-of footage from “Rogue One” has been added to the “Meet the Makers” film featured in Star Wars Launch Bay.

In the popular daytime stage show “Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away,” guests will get a first look at AWR Troopers from “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Outfitted in their specialized Stormtrooper armor with a dark, ominous gleam, these soldiers serve as bodyguards and enforcers for Director Krennic, a highly placed officer within the Advance Weapons Research (AWR) division of the Empire. A new Troopers sequence will join the show Dec. 16. Performances daily.

The fan favorite nighttime show, “Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular,” will return to Disney’s Hollywood Studios on December 16 and will join “Jingle Bell, Jingle BAM!” as a second nightly fireworks spectacular at the park through Dec. 31. The show will continue to be presented in 2017.
Starting mid-December, randomized tracks will be returning to Star Tours – the Adventures Continue, the popular attraction that uses motion simulator-based technology. Instead of each ride experience launching from the planet of Jakku, the attraction will be randomized to both start and end at different locations for every galactic journey. New scenes from “Star Wars: Episode VIII” will be added to Star Tours in the coming year.

New in 2017

For the ultimate fan comes the ultimate tour. An all-new Star Wars guided tour is a seven-hour immersion in all the park’s current Star Wars experiences. Here’s what it includes:

  • A Star Wars “all-in-the-know” tour guide
  • Priority boarding for Star Tours – The Adventures Continue
  • Encounter two Star Wars characters (Chewbacca and Kylo Ren) at Star Wars Launch Bay
  • An in-depth, insider’s tour around Star Wars Launch Bay
  • Screening of “Star Wars: Path of the Jedi”
  • Enjoy Star Wars-themed menu items during dinner at Backlot Express
  • A spot in the Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular Dessert Party, which includes themed sweets and specialty beverages, as well as reserved viewing for the Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular fireworks show
  • Younglings ages 4-12 on the guided tour package can also train in the way of The Force in Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple. Priced at $129 per person, tours begin Jan. 2 and will be offered on Mondays and Saturdays throughout 2017. Reservations for January tours can be made soon.
This latest flight of additions celebrating the Star Wars saga continues to elevate the Star Wars presence at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Entire Star Wars-themed lands are now under construction at the theme park and at Disneyland Park in California.

D23 DISNEY FANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION—EPCOT 35: D23 heads to the parks in honor of Epcot’s 35th anniversary. The Main Street Electrical Parade Returns Jan. 20, Lighting Up the Nighttime at Disneyland

Separate-Ticket Premiere Welcomes Main Street Electrical Parade Back to Disneyland Park on Thursday, Jan. 19

The Main Street Electrical Parade, one of the most popular of all Disney parades, returns to Disneyland Park Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, with all the lights, sounds, music and fun that have made it a beloved icon. With nightly performances through Sunday, June 18, guests will have a limited time to enjoy the parade’s encore performance.

The dazzling and colorful after-dark parade premiered in Disneyland in 1972 and has been seen at Disney Parks around the world. Although its last Disneyland Park performance was in November 1996, and at Disney California Adventure Park in 2010, it has continued to shine brightly in the memories of thousands of guests.

Guests who wish to be among the first to welcome the parade back to Disneyland may purchase a special, separate ticket for an after-hours premiere on Thursday evening, Jan.19. After the park closes, premiere ticket holders will enjoy a night of exclusive access to select Disneyland attractions and select restaurants from 7:30 to midnight, along with an exciting performance of the Main Street Electrical Parade before its official return on Jan. 20. Tickets to the premiere go on sale for Disneyland Resort Annual Passholders on Tuesday, Dec. 6, and to the general public on Tuesday, Dec. 13. They may be purchased at any Disneyland Resort ticket booth or by calling 714-781-INFO (714-781-4636).

Accompanied by treasured Disney tunes interwoven with the distinctive “Baroque Hoedown” synthesized soundtrack, the Main Street Electrical Parade brings a variety of beloved Disney stories to life in parade floats covered in approximately half a million twinkling lights. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy lead the way and Cinderella, Peter Pan, Snow White, Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland are among the characters whose stories unfold along the parade route. Tinker Bell now appears with other fairies on the Peter Pan float.

The parade’s return to Disneyland for the first time since 1996 also marks the return of the original Main Street Electrical Parade opening float. A whimsical train pulls a giant drum unit that proclaims “Disneyland Presents … Main Street Electrical Parade” in bright lights.

Some of the parade’s most impressive scenes are the 23-foot-tall Clock Tower looming over Cinderella’s Ball, attended by elegant ballroom dancers in costumes covered with lights; and the 108-foot-long finale unit, a red-white-and-blue tribute to America. Elliot, the smoke-breathing, tail-wagging “Pete’s Dragon,” weighs more than 5,600 pounds and is 16 feet tall, more than 10 feet wide and 38 feet long. Guests will need to keep an eye out for Elliot, who disappears from time to time along the route.

The Main Street Electrical Parade was performed more than 3,600 times for more than 75 million guests during its original run in Disneyland Park. The enduring popularity of the parade led to Electrical Parades at Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The parade returned to the Disneyland Resort with an engagement in Disney California Adventure Park from 2001 to 2010.

A specially decorated Main Street Electrical Parade boat will appear in the 108th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade, Dec. 14 through 18 in Newport Harbor. Mickey Mouse will serve as Grand Marshal for the popular boat parade on opening night, Wednesday, Dec. 14, accompanied by Disney Ambassador Allie Kawamoto.

Information about the Main Street Electrical Parade premiere party, happening after hours on Jan. 19, will be available on www.Disneyland.com beginning Tuesday, Dec. 6.
